H.E.A.R.T, the Helping Eaton Animals Resource Team, is a non-profit all-volunteer organization dedicated to providing resources for the improvement of animal welfare in Eaton County, Michigan.

H.E.A.R.T.
does not operate a shelter or animal care facility. Our committment is to promote animal welfare in our community through special programs and to improve conditions for shelter animals.

Because H.E.A.R.T. is an all-volunteer organization, every dollar that is donated goes directly to animal welfare resources.

H.E.A.R.T
has received non-profit organization approval from the State of Michigan, and is awaiting 501(c)3 approval from the U.S. Internal Revenue Service.

We invite all interested parties to join us in this cause. You can contact us by E-mail or by regular mail; the information appears at the top of each of our webpages. We do not maintain an office with a phone or FAX.

Ingham County Animal Control and Shelter's Neighborhood
Licensing and Vaccination Day July 9, 2010

The Vaccination and Licensing event for Ingham County went very well.  Volunteers were there from Jackson County, Eaton County, other animal welfare groups.  The setup was wonderful.  Canopy type (sideless) tents for every feature like a long one for where the people stood in line, and then one for paper work for vaccinations and paying, one for licensing, one for vaccinating the dogs, one for general information of spay and neuter programs, face-painting for the kids and an enclosed trailer for vaccinating the cats. They had water and pizza available for the volunteers.

THANK YOU!
January 13, 2010, members of HEART delivered approximately 1400 pounds (two pickup trucks full) of kitty litter to Eaton County Animal Control.  The majority of this kitty litter was a donation from Mid-Michigan Cat Rescue in Grand Ledge.  HEART also added several pounds to this supply.  Thanks to all of you that also made generous donations.  This should be enough to last for several months.

K-9 ONE Search & Rescue of Michigan, USA!
Jeanne Minier had the pleasure of doing an interview with the handlers and caretakers for the K-9 ONE Search & Rescue group of Michigan last December.  Most of them were Labrador Retrievers, plus one German Shepherd and one Golden Retriever.  There is a Part 1 and Part 2.  Jeanne is mostly in Part 2.  She has the white jacket on.  It was filmed at a park just west of Hastings and Nashville where they were holding their monthly training.

H.E.A.R.T. MESSAGES

What can you do to help the cats and dogs at ECAC?

1. Please encourage people to adopt directly from Eaton County Animal Control
Eaton County Humane Society is rescuing what they can, but there are many others left behind that need homes too. Not all the cats and dogs have pictures posted on the ECAC website. The larger and older dogs don't have much of a chance, unless they are adopted or transferred to rescue groups.

Approximately 75%-80% of the cats and kittens are being euthanized in county shelters because there are not enough homes.  Approximately 25%-30% of dogs in shelters are purebred.  Please spay and neuter your pets.

2.  In order to be an effective volunteer, please see some of the political background of Animal Control in Eaton County.  Please read our "How To Volunteer" webpage.  There you will find information about the Eaton County Board of Commissioners and the Public Safety Committee, along with a recent history of Animal Control issues in Eaton County.  We are supportive of the Public Safety Committee's 18 task force recommendations, and wish to pursue these with your help.  TF Recommendations

3.  Attend meetings to find out what's going on.  After you're familiar with the process of government meetings, you can make a difference by speaking during public comment time to the officials.

You are welcome to attend the Eaton County Board of Commissioners meetings.  These are open to the public.  People can speak during the public comment time. The Board of Commissioners Meeting Room is in the Eaton County Courthouse, 1045 Independence Blvd, on the north side of Charlotte.  The Commissioners' next meeting is on Wednesday September 15 , 2010 at 7:00 p.m.

The Eaton County Public Safety Committee meets in the Eaton County Sheriff's Department training room. This is open to the public. People can speak during the public comment time, which is where we discuss ECAC concerns.
The Public Safety Committee's next 2010 meeting is on
Thursday, October 7, 2010 at 4:00 p.m.
See our Events page for more information.

Many thanks to all who have participated in or supported  H.E.A.R.T  activities !!!

Especially thank you to everyone that wrote letters, contacted your commissioners or supported stopping the sale of animals to research in Eaton County.

At the November 18, 2009 EC Commission meeting the resolution to ban the sale of animals to research was unanimously approved by the eleven commissioners that were present.  This is a huge Victory!  A copy of the resolution is attached.

Thank you so much for all your support!
